about

‘No Walls, No Air’, the fourth track to be released from flagrantly unclassifiable London band Gum Takes Tooth’s debut Rocket album
‘Arrow’, is a seven minute warp driven, euphonic chemical acidic demolition workout. The sounds of breathlessness and skittish electronic pulses spiral, ever accelerating upwards into the uncharted territory of the future, utterly absorbing in its explorative yet emancipatory clash of head banging Techno club pressure and foreboding Avant-Psych drum kit fuelled propulsion.

A seamless combination of propulsive live drumming and apocalyptically transcendent electronics, the performance retains the live ethic that the band have championed since their inception. Analogous to a band performance using traditional instrumentation, the drums pilot the synths which are programmed and tweaked on the fly in real-time to exhilarating effect at counter-point to cold and scathing vocal delivery delivering “a totally modern sound that taps back into a Post-Punk sense of dread
and sonic freedom.” (The Wire Magazine).

Fittingly the stunning b-side sees a re-realising of ‘No Walls, No Air,’ by FACT Magazine/Resident Advisor favourite and Marie Davidson label-mate, UK Techno producer Broken English Club, née Oliver Ho, who forges a bold and brutal Balladian path through EBM, Noise, Post Punk and Industrial influences in his own stunning material and in collaborations with Californian producer Silent Servant with output on labels Cititrax and Jealous God.

Ho’s version is notable for the use of his own vocals and lyrics on the remix. The song’s original lyrics centred around mankind’s destiny being wrought by calculating market forces other than ourselves and the manipulation of spatial environment through estate capitol. The remix lyrically has been transformed into a cyberpunk take on the information economy, where files become electronic people; consumer types, behaviours, tendencies elevate information and communication as an autonomous international power that transcends material and geographical economies.

Gum Takes Tooth are mavericks to the last, perpetual square-pegs and a band intent on forging onward to break all or any paradigms before them, creating kinetic anthems to battle everyday oppression - machine-driven mania with a very human heart on its sleeve.
